Congenital metabolic disorder testing

In Fukuoka City, we conduct tests for congenital metabolic disorders such as phenylketonuria in order to detect and treat illnesses in babies early. These disorders are caused by a congenital lack of certain enzymes necessary for physical and mental development, or by abnormalities in hormone synthesis.
Furthermore, if these diseases are left untreated, they can cause abnormalities in the physical and mental development of children, but early detection and treatment can prevent the onset of the disease.

Target disease

Phenylketonuria, homocystinuria, maple-derived diabetes, galactosemia, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, cretinism

What kind of test is it?

The test involves taking a small amount of blood from the sole of the baby's foot between the fourth and sixth day after birth.

Is there a cost for the test?

If you give birth at a medical institution within the city and undergo testing, the cost of the testing will be covered by the city of Fukuoka, so it will be free of charge.
However, please note that the costs associated with blood collection at a medical institution (blood collection fees) will be borne by the parents.

How can I get tested?

If you are planning to give birth at an obstetric medical institution in Fukuoka City, please apply to that institution.

If you are giving birth at an obstetric medical institution outside Fukuoka City (such as giving birth at your hometown), please inquire directly with the medical institution or the maternal and child health program staff at the prefectural office (or the city hall in the case of a city designated by government ordinance) regarding tests, costs, etc.
